It may be rose-tinted glasses that I use when I think of celebrities of old, but they all seemed to have a vital purpose. Of course, we still have these stars, but as we crossed into the new millennium, fame became desirable, regardless of merit. A recent discussion shows Internet users’ picks for throwaway talent whose fame surpasses their skill.
1. Kim Kardashian
Perhaps the peak of the zero-function celebrity crowd is the queen of disposable fame herself, Lady Kim Kardashian. However, a thread observer highlights that you are wrong if you consider KiKi a waste of space. “You are clearly forgetting that Kim K released the renowned song, ‘Jam,'” jokes a thread member. I detect more than a hint of sarcasm in this statement.
2. Chrissy Teigen
“I will never for the life of me understand how she got famous,” ponders a contributor. “Like, why does she keep appearing?” Well, I have two words for you: John Legend. It is as if some of these “famous” people morph out of nowhere, attached to their A-List partner’s success story. What’s worse is when we have to hear about their life stories — please stop.
3. Paris Hilton
Surprisingly, the original new millennial It-girl megastar was Kim-K’s mentor and previous employer. Kim worked as Paris’s assistant before becoming the best-known It-girl on the planet, taking the Internet age by storm. Hilton had many detractors in the early millennium, though this has softened with time. “I like Paris Hilton,” says one commenter. “I thought she was a dumb joke throughout the early ’00s, but she seems more human between her and Kim K.”
4. Drake
Those of us who remember Drake when he was in Degrassi: The Next Generation would never in ten lifetimes have imagined he’d turn out how he has. Meanwhile, some music fans have a scathing perspective on Toronto’s rap sensation. “I think he sounds bored like he’s whining,” laments the poster. “I think his music is horrible.” Someone once said, “I would rather listen to a Drake than to Drake.” I totally agree.
5. Brooklyn Beckham
David Beckham is an English sporting royalty. He once captained England’s soccer team and had a professional career of distinction, playing for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and AC Milan. His son, however, wasn’t blessed with sporting talent; sadly, he wasn’t blessed with much other talent either. But this didn’t stop him from securing a hefty deal for a book of his grainy iPhone photos. An update: Beckham claims to be a pro chef without training.
6. Meghan Markle
Since Meghan Markle’s glimmer of an acting career was drawing to a close with the hit TV show Suits ending, she tried her hand at British royalty. However, she didn’t take to such a demanding task, so she whisked her prince away to Hollywood, where she hatched plans to tell the world she wanted to be left alone. Life looks good for the former Princess Markle, with a reported $100-million Netflix deal in the bank. If life was a poker game, Meghan got a royal flush.
7. Prince Harry
Oh, Harry, where do we start? Us Brits used to love him so much; his devotion to the nation, always by his family’s side in hard times, and fighting on the frontlines in the Royal Air Force. Then came Meghan, and the people’s prince went from the most loved member of the Windsors to the most loathed. However, infamy is underrated: Harry scored big with Meghan and his Netflix deal.
8. Emma Watson
Emma Watson spent a decade growing up on screen alongside Messrs. Radcliffe and Grint, though lately, her lack of acting skill is being noticed by movie fans. “She seems like a lovely person,” writes a sympathetic fan. “But not the best actress.” I agree, and we are now seeing that they look the part and worked well for the franchise but have been somewhat exposed since then.
9. Jennifer Lopez
I will put the disclaimer here that I rate J-Lo as an actress in a few movies, but this beautiful lady had one seriously great publicist. “I just don’t get it,” laments a thread contributor. “She’s gorgeous, but her singing is meh, her acting is meh, and her dancing is good but nothing extraordinary.” If it makes it any better, I enjoyed “that” dress moment on Saturday Night Live.
10. Lars Ulrich
I am putting Lars Ulrich here because although I grew up loving him in Metallica, I had to discover the truth. In the years since the band went stratospheric, Ulrich has revealed he is the luckiest drummer in rock music. Secondly, the guy comes off as a petulant little child, especially in the docu-movie Metallica: Some Monster.
