People see celebrities as being larger than life. It’s easy to think they’ll always be around, so it’s a shock when they pass away unexpectedly. Certain celebrity deaths were so stunning that it’s hard to accept they’re gone. When an online community was asked which celebrity deaths shook people worldwide, the answers were gut-wrenching.

1. Chadwick Boseman

For numerous fans, the 2020 death of Chadwick Boseman was the most shocking of losses. He had been privately fighting advanced cancer for several years. He didn’t publicly disclose his diagnosis even when it advanced into the terminal stages.

Only after news of his death broke most people became aware of his illness. “He was heading toward the apex of his career and is suddenly gone from cancer. And so young,” someone states.

2. Kobe Bryant

Several months before Boseman’s tragic death was the devastating 2020 helicopter crash that took the lives of nine people, including retired basketball legend Kobe Bryant and one of his daughters. Bryant was only four years into retirement from the NBA and starting his second act as an Academy Award winner and youth basketball coach for his daughter’s team when the crash occurred.

After his run as a conflicted mob boss in the hit HBO series The Sopranos, the show’s viewers eagerly anticipated the filming and releasing of the rumored Sopranos movie. Fans recall the incredulity they felt when they read he had suddenly passed away at age 51 in 2013. There will never be another actor like him or another character like Tony Soprano.

7. Stevie Ray Vaughan

After spending the evening performing in a jam session as part of the opening act for Eric Clapton, blues guitarist and singer Stevie Ray Vaughan was among five people killed in a helicopter crash in 1990. His death was all the more tragic because, after years of battling drug and alcohol addictions, he achieved sobriety in the last years of his life. His influence on blues music continues to this day.

Sadly, all of the promises she showed didn’t come to fruition. After filming her final music video for her single “Rock the Boat,” Aaliyah was among nine people who died in a small plane crash in the Bahamas.
