As much as Rolling Stone would try to say otherwise, no album is perfect. While some bands or groups get dangerously close to achieving the perfect balance of rhythm for their respective albums, there’s no way of assembling the best tracklist of all time to put on a single creative work. Legends like David Bowie, Michael Jackson, and Fleetwood Mac have had albums with songs that shouldn’t have been included. Here are ten such songs.
1. My World
Use Your Illusion ll is the fourth studio album of the American Rock band Guns N’ Roses. The album was an instant success, selling over 700,000 copies in its first week and debuting at number one on popular charts. According to some fans, It was an almost perfect album except for one song, “My World.” A lot of people on the platform expressed their disappointment with the song, and one user pointed out that he completely forgot it existed. Another user added that it is a “Socio-psychotic state of bliss.”
2. You Caught the Light
The CHVRCHES album The Bones of What You Believe would have been a masterpiece had it not been for the one song that closed it out, “You Caught the Light.” Perhaps if Lauren Mayberry had sung it rather than one of the male members, it would have been better. But they often feel the need to do one song with the male members, which is not always good.
3. Yellow Submarine
Revolver is the seventh studio album by English rock band The Beatles. It is a stunning album with memorable songs, but many fans of the band made their displeasure in the song “Yellow Submarine” amply known. Some share their fondness for the song but agree that it was really bad for the album’s flow.
4. Mother
Synchronicity is the fifth and final studio album by the British rock band The Police, released in the summer of 1983. It is the band’s most successful release, which includes the hit singles: “Every Breath You Take,” “Wrapped Around Your Finger,” and “King of Pain.” One fan of the band on the forum pointed out that all the songs on the album were written by the group’s frontman Sting except “Mother,” which was by Andy Summers, and another user agreed that he sings “Mother” to his mom sometimes just to make her mad.
5. Oh Daddy
It is widely believed that Rumors, the 11th studio album by Fleetwood Mac, was intended to make a pop album that would expand on the commercial success of their self-titled 1975 album, Fleetwood Mac. The music of Rumors is characterized by a mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation, accented rhythms, guitars, and keyboards, while its lyrics concern personal and often troubled relationships. A user in an online forum conveyed that the album’s momentum was extraordinary and should all climax with “Gold Dust Woman.” Still, it all stumbled ultimately at the penultimate track, “Oh Daddy.” Another user also confirmed that “Oh Daddy” was boring and hard to listen to.
6. Boys Will Be Boys
The second album by Dua Lipa, Future Nostalgia, has many hits, such as the chart-topping “Levitating,” “Physical,” and “Don’t Start Now.” One of the pop singer’s fans on the forum aired that she was glad that she wasn’t alone in disliking the song “Boys Will Be Boys,” also adding that she felt that it was added to the end to purely send a message without factoring in whether it fits the theme. Another fan added that it was her favorite pop album, but the song doesn’t have the “it” factor.
7. The Girl Is Mine
The Girl Is Mine by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney from the Thriller album tells the story of two friends who are in love with the same woman and are trying to agree on who should win her heart. Someone on the forum expressed their discontent with the song performed by the two pop icons and also added that “Anytime Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney get together, bad things happen.”
8. Cheatin’
New Miserable Experience, the second studio album by the American rock band Gin Blossoms, was released in 1992. Several members on the platform lamented their dissatisfaction with the song “Cheatin’,” saying that it does not belong on the album. One member added that though he likes the track, it is a perfect example of a song entirely out of place within an album and that you wouldn’t know it’s the same band.
9. Swing on This
The final track on the album Jar of Flies by Alice in Chains, although still good, is probably the least memorable one. A commenter on the platform talked about how the song “Swing on This” is not the perfect ending for the album Jar of Flies, with another user affirming that “It’s so tonally off from their typical sound.”
10. Shake It
Let’s Dance is the 15th studio album by the English singer-songwriter David Bowie. All things considered, Let’s Dance is not a bad album. There is no talk of a masterpiece here, but the songs are catchy, easily memorable, and fun. One user on the platform maintains that the album could have been perfect if it had ended with the second to last song, “Cat People” instead of “Shake It,” while another user confirmed that though it is a great album, “Shake It” almost ruined it.
