As moviegoers, we often get lost in the stories unfolding on the big screen. But sometimes, the plot holes in a film can be so glaringly obvious that they detract from our enjoyment of the movie. Here are some of the most significant movie plot holes that ruined the whole film, as shared by viewers:
1. Interstellar (2014)
Paramount Pictures.
In Interstellar, Cooper and his team travel through a wormhole to another galaxy to find a new home for humanity. However, when they return to Earth, they find that only a few decades have passed, despite spending years in space. The time dilation theory suggests that time would pass slower for the astronauts than it would on Earth, but the difference in time would not be as significant as the movie portrays.
2. Jurassic Park (1993)
In Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs are recreated using ancient DNA found in mosquitoes that had bitten them and then preserved in amber. However, DNA has a half-life of around 500 years, meaning that it would degrade beyond use long before the time frame depicted in the movie.
3. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
At the end of The Dark Knight Rises, Batman is supposedly killed in a nuclear explosion. However, in the final scene, Alfred sees him alive and well in a café in Florence. It’s unclear how Batman could have survived the blast and escaped unnoticed, and the ending feels like a cop-out.
4. The Matrix (1999)
In The Matrix, humans are used as an energy source by machines. However, the laws of thermodynamics state that energy cannot be created or destroyed only transferred or converted. It’s unclear how machines can extract energy from humans, and the explanation in the movie is unsatisfactory.
5. Armageddon (1998)
In Armageddon, a team of oil drillers is sent to space to plant a bomb on an asteroid heading toward Earth. However, the asteroid is the size of Texas, and it’s unlikely that a small bomb would be enough to destroy it. Additionally, the time frame depicted in the movie for training and launching the mission is unrealistic.
6. Back to the Future (1985)
In Back to the Future, Marty McFly travels back in time and inadvertently interferes with his parents’ first meeting, jeopardizing his own existence. However, if he had never been born, he wouldn’t have been able to travel back in time and change the past in the first place.
7. Prometheus (2012)
In Prometheus, the crew of a spaceship discovers a planet that may have been inhabited by an alien race that created humanity. However, the movie’s plot contradicts the established lore of the Alien franchise and raises more questions than it answers.
8. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
In the Harry Potter series, Portkeys are enchanted objects used for transportation. In The Goblet of Fire, Harry and Cedric use a Portkey to escape the Triwizard Tournament. However, they are transported to a graveyard where Voldemort awaits them. The plot hole here is that the Portkey is supposed to take them to a designated location, not to a random spot where they could be ambushed.
9. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
In this movie, Indiana Jones survives a nuclear explosion by hiding inside a refrigerator. The explosion throws the fridge several miles and lands safely, with Jones emerging unscathed. The plot hole here is that it’s unlikely that a fridge would provide enough protection to survive a nuclear blast, let alone the impact of landing after being thrown miles away.
10. The Terminator (1984)
In The Terminator, a cyborg is sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor, the mother of the future leader of the human resistance. The plot hole here is that if the cyborg had succeeded in killing Sarah, the future leader of the opposition would never have been born. Therefore, there would be no reason for the cyborg to be sent back in time in the first place.
