10 One-Hit Wonders Who Had Much More To Offer

Some musical artists are regarded as one-hit wonders for their meager success in the Billboard charts. I would happily be known as a one-trick pony if that one trick supported me into retirement. However, are we being fair to these so-called one-hit wonders? A recent online music fan discussion thinks so.

1. MC Hammer

Poor Hammer; he will always be known for the global hit “You Can’t Touch This,” but you did know the man with the decade’s most giant pants had more than one song, right? The Oakland-born ’90s icon had five top-ten hits, two of which sold more copies than his famous, Rick James-inspired classic.

2. Right Said Fred

Of course, the world knows the annoyingly catchy “I’m Too Sexy,” but English pop duo Right Said Fred had a hugely successful follow-up single called “Deeply Dippy.” Brothers Richard and Fred Fairgrass made the Christmas top five in Britain with their Jocelyn Brown-inspired “Don’t Talk, Just Kiss.”

3. A-ha

“Take on Me” is up there with stiff competition as one of the ’80s standout pop songs, featuring the famously kitsch comic strip music video. However, Norway’s biggest export since crude oil and Jarlsberg cheese had another (arguably better) single in “The Sun Always Shines on TV,” which made the top twenty chart.

4. Rick Astley

I am not sure any solo artist has dined out on one hit single more than the irrepressible Rick Astley, but we still love him. I haven’t yet been ‘Rick-rolled,’ but I look forward to the day I click that hidden link. However, British fans who are old enough to remember will know Astley’s follow-up track “Together Forever.” Maybe it wasn’t as strong as “Never Gonna Give You Up,” but it went to number one in the U.K.

5. Hanson

The early nineties were a golden time for a teenager with a guitar. The three siblings from Tulsa, Oklahoma, gave nerdy teenage guitarists everywhere (yes, that was me) hope for a musical career. However, “MMMBop” aside, this band was prolific, releasing eleven albums and scoring another top ten Music Billboard single hit with their follow-up song, “Where’s The Love?”

6. Aqua

Danish plastic pop band Aqua is famous for irritating parents everywhere after inflicting the horrific “Barbie Girl” on the world. However, they still have a strong cult following, and the group has a respectable singles record following their initial success. “Doctor Jones” was another smash hit, going number one in several prominent music markets.

7. The Verve

The British alternative scene of the music mid-nineties was on fire with the emergence of Radiohead, Oasis, Blur, and The Verve. However, the Verve’s biggest release was their MTV video-driven “Bittersweet Symphony,” though “The Drugs Don’t Work” and “Lucky Man” were both high-charting singles.

8. Presidents of the United States of America

I recently treated my ten-year-old son to the video for “Peaches,” which was a house favorite in the late nineties. However, anyone who thinks this band only did one good song needs to remember that the Seattle-based post-grungers cover of “Video Killed the Radio Star” was famous, and their “Cleveland Rocks” cover became a Drew Carey Show theme song.

9. Sinead O’Connor

The musical world lost a considerable presence earlier this year, and since Sinead O’Conner’s tragic ending, music fans have reflected on her stellar music career. She came to fame with the global sensation “Nothing Compares to You,” but her first album was critically acclaimed. It depends on how you measure success. “A lot of one-hit wonders are only that if you only look at the Billboard pop singles charts and ignore all the others charts at the time,” writes a music fan.

10. Thin Lizzy

The much-loved Irish rock band’s most famous song is possibly their worst. “The Boys are Back in Town” doesn’t come close to other songs they wrote. Yes, “Boys” charted in the U.S. at number 12, but the band had several other hits in other countries before and after that famous number.
