We’ve all had those days when the universe seems out to get us. A rough day at the office, a morning stuck in traffic, or a rainy day ruining your plans, sometimes we all need a little pick me up. In an online discussion, people shared the go-to movies they watch when they need a break from the stress of everyday life.

1. Chef (2014)

Chef is a story about a boy and his father bonding over a shared interest in cooking as they drive a food truck across the states. While the film is centered around the cooking of Cuban cuisine, the real story is the connection the divorced father makes with his son. By the film’s end, the once down-and-out chef is inspired and ignited by his passion for cooking to open a new restaurant. Disguised as a cooking film, this is much more about the connection between father and son.

2. Hook (1991)

This movie always brings me back to my childhood. Robin Williams is at his finest, delivering non-stop action and excitement in this Peter Pan adaptation. Epic adventures with the Lost Boys and battles with the infamous Captain Hook will bring you that great nostalgia feel. This film is a no-brainer go-to when I’m feeling down.

A film that has gone under the radar, Second Hand Lions is a beautiful story about a young boy going to live with his estranged great-uncles. While spending the summer, the men bond with the boy, sharing stories of their past that may or may not be true. Tales of romance and adventure lead the way in this feel-good movie about a boy coming into his own.

An 80s comedy staple, Caddyshack may be one of the funniest movies of its generation. With a star-studded cast of Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, and Rodney Dangerfield, this film will surely turn that frown upside down. If the improv comedy throughout the film doesn’t get you laughing, the adorable gophers certainly will.

Piggybacking on the last entry, Airplane could also be in the mix for the funniest movie of its generation. It’s filled with clever satire, so it’s no wonder it’s still popular to this day. If you want a movie where you don’t have to think much and just laugh, this is the one for you.

6. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

One of my favorite movies, this film tells the story of a mild-mannered man going to the ends of the earth to find something he truly believes in. Action-packed with beautiful landscapes, paired with a soundtrack to transport you to the faraway places Walter travels to, this film can turn your day around. This movie always inspires me to live life to its fullest.

A touching story about a young man with Down Syndrome and aspirations of becoming a professional wrestler. Teaming up with an outlaw who becomes his coach will leave you with a smile from ear to ear. Heartwarming and funny, this tale tells the story of two unlikely individuals bonding unconventionally.

A classic combination of an uptight businessman and a sloppy goofball is always a recipe for laughs. In this comedy, Steve Martin and John Candy’s characters try to get home for Thanksgiving while trying everything they can to cross the Midwest in the depths of winter. Being complete opposites, hijinks are plenty. I dare you to watch the highway scene and not break a smile.

9. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

A unique film starring Will Ferrell in a role you may be unfamiliar with, the movie is about a man who hears a voice one day, realizing he is the protagonist of the voice’s new book. One man online finds comfort in this movie, saying, “It can seem a little dry at first, but I find it hilarious, clever, and ultimately really uplifting. Don’t be put off by Will Farrell being the lead; it’s not his typical style at all and is really very wonderful and thoughtful.” He goes on to say, “It always shakes me out of any apathy or melancholy and gives me a brighter outlook on life.”

Add in all the cute dogs, and I can’t think of a better movie to make your day a little brighter.
