12 Foods People Admit Are More Hype Than Flavor

Have you ever dined at a restaurant with a ridiculous menu? Last year, I had a reservation at The Sugar Factory and ordered a veggie burger dipped in Flamin’ Hot Cheeto dust. The sandwich didn’t taste much different than a regular veggie burger and instantly hurt my stomach, but I gave in to the temptation of “weird food” menu items. According to an internet thread, 12 overrated foods are lacking in flavor.

1. Fancy Flaking

“A lot of places don’t put any effort into actually decorating. When I get fancy desserts without gold, they take extra effort to drizzle syrup in patterns and place fruits fancily, but gold flake desserts place a handful of flakes over it and call it a day,” a dessert connoisseur shares. “I want a dessert that’s expensive because of the amount of fancy work and the quality of ingredients that go into it. Your shiny trinkets add nothing,” someone else jots down.

2. Bacon

A forum member says bacon absorbs flavor from other foods paired with and is a “second-string meat.” Another bacon despiser states that when they went vegan, everyone they told worried about getting on without consuming bacon. This vegan celebrated their eighth year without eating meat; bacon is the last food item they miss.

3. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Mac N’ Cheese

The Flamin’ Hot collection of food multiplies every day. A few years ago, flamin’ hot Cheetos populated grocery aisles as a novelty snack, but today, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Flaming Hot Jerky, and Flamin’ Hot Mac N’ Cheese. Those who’ve consumed the delicacy claim the amount of red food dye turns them away from enjoying it, and others claim the dish burnt a hole in their stomach.

Crumbl Cookie is a Utah-based franchise that overtook social media a few years ago, displaying extravagant quarter-pound cookies in a revolving door of flavors. Crumbl Cookie customers allege the hockey pucks come undercooked, oversalted, and way too sweet to enjoy.

5. Fondant

Fondant is a stellar example of food used for show, not flavor. Bakers make the hard icing from a combination of gelatin, sugar, water, and shortening, which is the worst part of decorative cakes. Cake artists concoct the most fabulous creations from the substance, but the chewy, almost flavorless icing doesn’t do much for the tastebuds.

6. Pumpkin Spice

“Pumpkin spice everything. I never got the craze, and maybe it’s because I grew to dislike pumpkin, but I feel that can be overrated too,” an avid pumpkin spice detester writes. Piggybacking off that thought, someone says that pumpkin spice flavor is just nutmeg and cinnamon.

7. Chick-fil-A

According to consumers, Chick-fil-A staples include a two-lane line spilling into the street, excellent service, and mediocre chicken. Out of all the fast-food places in the U.S., Popeye’s offers a better chicken sandwich with a shorter wait time, this thread suggests.

8. Coffee

Who doesn’t love “hot bean soup.” Many contributors think coffee is too bitter to enjoy, no matter how many syrups or sugars they try to mask the flavor. Anti-coffee enthusiasts remark that the smell is pleasant but doesn’t translate to any flavors, making for a subpar drink.

9. Foie Gras

The French fare, foie gras, has an acquired taste and is banned in multiple countries for its production. Farmers force-feed geese or ducks through gavage. The birds have no way to avoid this painful tactic, and during feeding, birds may develop liver diseases and carry illnesses to humans when they consume foie gras.

10. Oysters

“Nothing appetizing about a snotty slug in a shot of seawater,” a person who once tried the seafood pronounces. A shocked individual gasps at how people eat oysters, swallowing them whole, comparing it to drinking a cup of seawater. A few people who comment that they like oysters can’t decide if they like the seafood or the toppings (horseradish and lemon) smothered on the sea slugs.

11. Wine

“I enjoy wine, but I don’t really enjoy a $50 bottle that much more than a $15 bottle. And it’s not just me. Studies have shown that most people can’t taste the difference if you obscure the label and price,” a wine drinker reports. A second wine adorer notes their palate doesn’t allow them to taste subtle hints of flavors interspersed in the alcohol. They taste “sour grape juice.”

12. Lobster

Seafood epicures consider lobsters to be the cockroaches of the sea. It is not the most appetizing thought when dining at a Michelin-star restaurant. One seafood eater utters that lobster is a pain to consume and only boasts flavor when submerged in garlic butter.
