Where Are They Now? 12 Stars Whose Fame Was Fleeting

It happens all too often that a celebrity pops briefly and disappears; they’re inescapable for a year or two, showing up in or leading multiple major movies and then gone. One pop culture fan asks others online who they remember as the most impactful and quickly forgotten stars of recent years, and there’s no shortage.

1. Sam Worthington

Sam Worthington got a bit of a boost last year after the release of Avatar: The Way of Water reminded us why he was a big deal more than a decade ago, but besides his connection to that major franchise, he hasn’t done much recently. After the first Avatar in 2009, he was cast in several big-budget blockbusters, including Clash of the Titans and Terminator: Salvation. But almost as quickly as he’d arrived, he fell back into semi-obscurity. Maybe if it takes less than a decade for the next Avatar sequel, he’ll stick around in people’s minds this time.

2. Emilia Clarke

Many cite the Game of Thrones cast as a group of actors who seemed poised to become massive stars and then just didn’t, except for Pedro Pascal. Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen on the show, stands out as the actor who made the biggest splash when she starred in, just like Sam Worthington, a Terminator film that failed to land with fans and hasn’t made much of an impact since. Even her inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Gi’ah in the Disney+ show Secret Invasion, doesn’t seem like it will do much to lift her star.

3. Taylor Kitsch

Taylor Kitsch made a fantastic impression on viewers as Tim Riggins on the hit show Friday Night Lights and parlayed his good looks and talent into several big-screen roles in the IP-driven blockbusters X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Battleship and John Carter. But none of those films were the big hits the studios had hoped, and he’s since dialed his presence back into more character-driven work on TV.

4. Tinashe

Many people in the discussion say that they know Tinashe has a successful career, but that for a moment, “everyone thought she was gonna be the next Beyonce.” The actor, singer, and dancer has released six full-length studio albums and appeared on the big and small screen multiple times. But she’s far from the household name some felt she would be and deserves to be. But she’s still only 30, so she may yet break out in a more significant way.

5. Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom was inescapable in the 2000s, from his role as the elf Legolas in The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films and his starring role as Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. But since then, he’s failed to make much of an impact. Just this year, he’s in the Gran Turismo movie, but it’s not exactly a hit or something many people are discussing.

6. Elisha Cuthbert

Some people in the discussion say that Elisha Cuthbert, who starred in several teen comedies and horror movies in the 2000s, played a pivotal role in their teen years; one person even says Cuthbert “made me realize I also like girls.” Today, some people have forgotten her name, and while she’s working regularly in movies and TV, she’s far from the top-billed actor she once was.

7. Ian Somerhalder

When people first saw Ian Somerhalder on Lost, they thought he would surely be a star. The actor’s good looks and bad-boy charisma make him a joy to watch, but for some reason, he could never push his career into the superstar territory many think he deserved. He’s working regularly and had a starring role on The Vampire Diaries for almost a decade, but he never broke through in a significant way.

8. January Jones

While playing Betty Draper on Mad Men, a performance for which she was both Golden Globe and Emmy nominated, January Jones seemed like a shoo-in for stardom. Yet she never became the movie star that people thought she’d be. Besides a key supporting role in X-Men: First Class as Emma Frost, she wasn’t in any blockbusters, and since the end of Mad Men, her career has fizzled.

9. Josh Hartnett

Like Elisha Cuthbert, Josh Hartnett was everywhere as a teen and young adult, from horror classics to indie darlings and war epics. He continued to work on some big-name projects in the 2000s, but in the 2010s, the smaller films he starred in made little impression, and he was best known for the TV series Penny Dreadful. He seemed about to be forgotten, but then he appeared in both Oppenheimer and Black Mirror this year, so we’ll see what happens.

10. Sky Ferreira

Like Tinashe, Sky Ferreira is a multi-hyphenate actor, singer, songwriter, and model who many thought would be a huge deal after the release of her album Night Time, My Time in 2013. But she hasn’t released a full-length album since that album. She’s appeared in minor roles in high-profile movies and TV shows, like Baby Driver and Twin Peaks, but she’s far from the major pop star people thought she might be.

11. Clive Owen

Clive Owen’s moment in the spotlight was remarkably brief. Between 2004 and 2007, he starred in multiple awards contender dramas and stylish action movies from prominent filmmakers like Robert Rodriguez and Alfonso Cuarón. But in the decade and a half since then, he hasn’t appeared in anything too memorable. He’s working steadily, but he’s far from the A-lister that he was for an all-too-brief period.

12. Chloe Grace Moretz

Chloe Grace Moretz made a huge splash in 2010 when she played a foul-mouthed and deadly superhero. For a few years after that, she was the actor of the moment, taking on iconic roles like the eponymous Carrie in a new adaptation and working with directors like Tim Burton and Olivier Assayas. But towards the middle of the 2010s, she seemed to fade out of the public eye despite still working regularly. She’s starred in several films since, but none have made the same kind of impact as her work in the early part of that decade.
